Today is Bike to Work Day. I wonder how many people will take advantage of this and actually bike to work - hopefully a few. To see other Bike Month events check out the BIKE MONTH WEBSITE.
A recent article in the Brooklyn Paper was talking about police cracking down on cyclists running red lights. I know a lot of cyclists get upset at the police and what I'm about to say makes me unpopular with fellow bikers but I think it's a good idea. Too many cyclists ride like maniacs - zipping through red lights and stop signs, weaving in and out of cars and pedestrians without even slowing down. How can you get upset at the behavior of cars when you show no regard for the traffic rules yourself? I do think cops should crack down on cyclists but I also think they should crack down on motorists even harder.

I have to agree with you on this one. Cyclists must obey the rules of the road. Unfortunatley, many cyclists don't know what those rules are. On occassion I will see a car running red lights but I see cyclists do it quite often which puts pedestrians in danger. We have to remember that not all of us are drivers and not all of us are cyclists but all of us are pedestrians at one point or another. Yield to pedestrians especially in crosswalks and perhaps people might be a little more receptive to more bike lanes throughout the city.
