Just 3 short blocks away from 34 Crooke is a little hole in the wall called Pepper's Jerk Chicken. We tried this place last night and it was very good. The place is not somewhere you go for the decor - it's take-out only and it's pretty run down, in fact, it's a little bit gross inside. The chicken, however, is why you go, not to be impressed with the interior decorating. The chicken was great. We got one with rice and beans and one without. The "dinner" comes with rice and beans and a few wilted leaves of lettuce that is supposed to be your salad. I was optimistic that this place would be good because there were people waiting in line for chicken. We had to wait about 10 minutes and by the time we got our order the wait had grown to over 15 minutes. It's quite inexpensive too. Another place that I'll be going back to, especially on nights like last night when I'm getting home late and I'm too tired to cook.
I'm a little confused if this place is called "Pepper's" or "Peppa's" I've seen it both ways. If someone can clarify that for me it would be nice.

I just found out about this blog, and I'm very curious about your decision to purchase an apartment in this building. I have lived on Crooke ave my entire life, was born in on Crooke ave as a matter of fact. I love this neighborhood, I have many friends here, but I would never invest money in this area. Everyone on the block thought the idea of condo's on Crooke Ave was laughable and didn't think anyone would buy one. They say the area is on a upswing, and although I have seen progress since the low's of the 80's and 90's, I did'nt think it was ready for condo's. How much research did you do before you purchased? How are you liking the area? Any regrets?
It's Rice and Beans in the Spanish spots but Rice and Peas in the West Indian ones while Americans say Peas and Rice. The way that it's said is a sure sign of where you are from. Side note, I don't care how good food is, I am not eating it out of a grungy whole in the wall. Take a walk down Flatbush or Church on a nice day and you are sure to find many cleaner but still good options.
Oh yeah, welcome to the area. Despite what Jamal says, it is a great area. Too bad that he has lived here all of his life but doesn't think the area is worthy of his investing in. My credit is good and I am saving every extra penny that I can so that I can buy something right here where I grew up. These are the same people who when the neighborhood improves and they become priced out will complain about how they are being pushed/priced out by gentrifiers.
